A RN Is Troubled With Her Terrible Depression And Decides To Stop Drinking

For the past three years Carolyn has been a RN at a large general hospital. As a professional nurse, she clearly knew what to tell her patients when it came to their health issues but in her personal life, then again, she clearly didn't practice what she preached. For instance, she usually drank quite abusively, she infrequently exercised, she smoked approximately two packs of cigarettes per day, and she was approximately forty-five pounds overweight.

One morning on her way to work, Carolyn got into a car accident. Since the accident was her fault and since her speech was slurred when she talked, the arresting highway patrolman administered a breathalyzer test. In agreement with standard police operating procedures, when a person gets involved in a traffic accident and fails a breathalyzer test, the individual has to spend at least three hours in the municipal jail.

Actually, Carolyn should have known better than to drive after she was drinking because she recently went to an alcohol awareness class at the hospital that focused on information about long term alcohol effects such as the following: alcohol poisoning, binge drinking, DUIs, and the main differences between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.

It almost goes without saying that Carolyn felt embarrassed about her traffic accident. Additionally, she felt disgraced about the fact that the accident was her fault. And perhaps worst of all she was humiliated by the fact that she was driving after she had a few drinks. As Carolyn reflected on this event, then again, she thought how fortunate she was because down the road her drinking problems could have been a lot worse due to the long term effects of alcohol.

In any case, Carolyn's shame about her traffic accident caused her to reconsider her life and make some substantial and positive alterations. First, she was going to quit drinking in an excessive manner. This would obviously help her steer clear of long term alcohol abuse. Second, she was going to quit smoking. Third, she was going to go on a diet. And fourth, she was going to start exercising.

As disconcerted and depressed as Carolyn was about the entire traffic accident circumstance, she used this painful experience as a catalyst for healthy change. Furthermore, she used her painful experience as a real eye opener that she had been failing to address her own health while she professionally told others how to live in a more healthy manner. After all had been said and done, she finally saw the two-facedness in her actions and decided that she would live her life as a positive source of encouragement for other people.
