A Young Gentleman Requires Treatment For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcohol And Drug Addiction

Roughly three months ago I had breakfast with a forty-nine-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his perpetual relationship difficulties.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so overwhelmed by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he essentially has little or no reason to accomplish much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish three semesters of graduate school in sports history.

Benjamin's situation makes me wonder if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and perceive his drinking problems and drug addiction and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets addiction counseling that results in lasting sobriety.

It may be asked how rehab would help his alcohol and drug addiction. First of all, there are more than a few newly created physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detoxification process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is utterly nothing helpful about drug abuse and abusive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the route to a premature death, poor work and school performance, financial difficulties, legal problems, deteriorating health, and shattered relationships. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him cope with these medical issues more effectively and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.

Since Benjamin doesn't have the resolve to do much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he urgently needs a little hope for a healthier lifestyle. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the counseling he needs for his mental illness and alcohol dependency and drug addiction and continue with his treatment program.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs via alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the treatment he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with direction, self-respect, and passion.

More positive relationships, positive change, self respect, and a wonderful life are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to obtain the medical rehab he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a sober and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
